Angeles Council Slams Suntay for Sexist Remarks on Anne Curtis
Angeles City Council condemns sexist remarks of Rep. Bong Suntay about Anne Curtis, calls them unacceptable, and demands accountability to uphold respect for women.
By Mark Sison I In a March 10, 2026 session, the Angeles City Council passed a resolution condemning Congressman Jesus “Bong” C. Suntay for making sexist and objectifying remarks about actress Anne Curtis during a House Committee on Justice hearing, calling the comments “unacceptable and disgraceful” in public service.

Councilors Atty. Jeselle Dayrit, Michelle Bonifacio, Maricel Morales-Agoncillo, and JC Aguas demanded accountability, noting with grave concern that Suntay publicly claimed he did nothing wrong. “Silence enables abusers. We will not tolerate disrespect toward women in government or society,” the resolution stated.

The Council backed the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) in promoting gender-responsive discourse and urged the House Committee on Ethics to take immediate action under Republic Act No. 6713, the Code of Conduct for public officials.

The House Committee on Ethics and Privileges is currently investigating Suntay following a formal referral on March 4, 2026. The probe stems from “lewd” and “inappropriate” remarks he made regarding Curtis during the impeachment hearing of Vice President Sara Duterte, in which he argued using an analogy about his “desire” for the actress that internal thoughts are not punishable. The comments drew immediate condemnation for violating the Safe Spaces Act and local “Bawal Bastos” ordinances.

On March 10, the committee held its first executive session, giving Suntay 10 days to submit a verified response. While he has issued a public apology claiming his remarks were not malicious, he faces strong backlash from the public and fellow lawmakers. The committee, chaired by Rep. JC Abalos, has 60 session days to finalize a recommendation, which could range from reprimand to suspension or expulsion from the House.

Certified copies of the Angeles City Council resolution will be transmitted to the Office of the Speaker, the House Committees on Ethics and Justice, and the PCW for proper action. The resolution takes effect immediately.

Councilor Dayrit emphasized: “This is a stand for every Juana. We set boundaries. We speak up. We refuse to be enablers.”

Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II also welcomed International Women’s Day, saying: “Maligayang Araw ng Kababaihan! Pagpupugay sa lakas, sipag, at mahalagang ambag ng mga kababaihan sa ating komunidad. Patuloy nating kilalanin at suportahan ang kanilang papel sa pag-unlad ng ating lungsod.”
