When you meet someone you’ve been singing along with for years — at the top of your lungs in videoke, no less — you can’t help but fan out a little. That’s exactly what happened when I met the one and only Imelda Papin, the timeless Jukebox Queen.

I told her, “Ma’am, I love your song! I always sing it sa videoke, kahit frustrated singer lang ako.” She laughed — that genuine, hearty laugh that makes you feel like you’ve known her forever.

But beyond the music and the memories, there’s something even more remarkable about her now. Imelda Papin is currently one of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) — a role that lets her help more Filipinos in ways her songs never could.

We got the chance to talk not just to the artist we grew up with, but to a woman who has served three terms as a public servant, working with different presidents and adapting with grace and grit.

She shared how leadership, for her, isn’t about fame or influence. “Ang tunay na serbisyo, ‘yung marunong kang makinig at magbigay kahit wala kang makuha pabalik,” she said softly — words that carry more power than any campaign slogan ever could.

And that’s the thing: in a country where politics often feels like showbiz, Imelda Papin is both — but in the best way possible. She’s proof that you can be an artist with heart and a leader with integrity.
