A butane stove exploded inside a samgyupsal restaurant in Barangay Caranglaan, Dagupan City on March 12, injuring about 13 to 15 people, many of them students celebrating a birthday.
A birthday celebration quickly turned into panic after a sudden explosion rocked a samgyupsal restaurant in Dagupan City, Pangasinan.
A viral video circulating on social media shows a group of students happily singing “Happy Birthday” inside the restaurant in Barangay Caranglaan on March 12. Moments later, a loud blast believed to be caused by a butane stove interrupted the celebration, sending diners scrambling for safety.
Authorities said around 13 to 15 people were injured in the incident. Several victims reportedly suffered burns on different parts of their bodies and were immediately brought to nearby hospitals for treatment. Some of them are still recovering from the injuries.
The video of the incident, captured by Paul Marquez, quickly spread online and raised concerns about the safety of portable butane stoves commonly used in samgyupsal and tabletop grilling restaurants.
Police authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Investigators are looking into whether the butane stove malfunctioned, was improperly used, or had a possible gas leak that triggered the blast.
Portable butane stoves are widely used in restaurants and homes across the Philippines because they are convenient and easy to operate. However, safety experts have long warned that improper use, damaged gas canisters, overheating, or incorrect installation can lead to dangerous accidents.
Authorities reminded restaurant owners and customers to always check the condition of butane stoves and gas canisters before use. They also advised avoiding overheating the stove, using the correct type of fuel, and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent gas buildup.
Local officials also urged restaurants to strictly follow safety guidelines and regularly inspect their cooking equipment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident serves as a reminder that while tabletop stoves are common in dining establishments, proper handling and safety checks are essential to avoid accidents that can quickly turn a joyful gathering into a tragedy.
