Every year, Belenismo in Tarlac brings out the province’s best creativity and devotion, but this 2025 edition? Iba ang dating. The final judging held last Saturday, November 23, showcased dazzling entries across five categories: Community, Church, Monumental, Grand Non-Municipal, and Grand Municipal.
From humble barangay setups to giant, jaw-dropping installations, every belen seemed to whisper its own story—crafted with love, faith, and that signature Tarlaqueño ingenuity. The streets felt alive, parang buong probinsya sabay-sabay huminga ng “Pasko na, tara na!”
At the heart of this beloved tradition stands Dra. Isa Cojuangco Suntay, co-founder of the Tarlac Heritage Foundation and one of the key organizers of Belenismo. For years, she has helped guide communities, parishes, and local artists in keeping the belen culture vibrant and meaningful. Under her leadership, Belenismo has grown not only as a competition but as a cultural movement—one that strengthens identity and uplifts pride among Tarlaqueños.
Walking through the displays, you’ll see families posing for photos, kids tugging their parents’ sleeves out of excitement, and volunteers sharing kwento about how long nights, recycled materials, teamwork, and occasional kulitan led to these glowing masterpieces. “Hindi lang ito contest. Kwento ito ng faith namin,” one participant shared.
The Monumental and Grand categories felt like stepping into full-blown Christmas dioramas—lights dancing, silhouettes telling the nativity story, and details so sharp you’d think they were carved by angels on overtime. Meanwhile, Community and Church categories highlighted sincerity and devotion—simple but powerful, parang tunay na puso ng Pasko.
Why This Matters to Every Filipino
Belenismo isn’t just about winning awards. It’s about remembering who we are.
In a country often tested by calamities, politics, and daily survival, the belen reminds us of the values that keep Filipinos steady—pamilya, pagkakaisa, at pananampalataya. It anchors us to the story of hope, a reminder that beginnings can happen even in the simplest of settings, just like the nativity scene itself.
For many Filipinos, seeing these displays feels like a breather—a soft nudge that amid the noise of the world, may liwanag pa rin. And we create that light. Together.
So here’s the question: in a season filled with so much noise, what kind of light will you choose to bring into the world?
